About the Speaker:

Bart Vanderhaegen is a management consultant, with strong interests in physics, epistemology and economics. He is also a podcaster and public speaker.

Explanation of the topic:

The Austrian school of economics has a distinctive approach to explaining how the government works. Instead of treating it as a black box, or as some incontestable “given”, the Austrian school treats the government as a collective of acting individuals, who pursue goals and are influenced by incentives.

This approach allows us to better understand how the government actually works and what impact it can have and cannot have. We will discuss the different functions of government (protecting rights, provisioning public goods, up until stimulating the economy).

In particular the function of stimulating the economy will be covered. In order to do this, we’ll look into the various instruments that governments use to try to stimulate the economy:

  • Monetary policy (inflating the money supply, lowering the interest rate)
  • Fiscal policy (public -deficit- spending to drive demand & consumption)
  • Subsidies
  • Tax cuts
  • Tariffs
  • Privatization

For each of these, we’ll critically argue why and how these instruments can stimulate the economy, or not. Also, you will learn for example why classical Keynesian multiplier theory is flawed.

Join us to discover the unique Austrian method and arguments applied to these relevant topics in today’s world !
