"The gold standard has one tremendous virtue: the quantity of the money supply, under the gold standard, is independent of the policies of governments and political parties. This is its advantage. It is a form of protection against spendthrift governments."

Ludwig von Mises, Economic Policy, 1979

“One of the most important books of our generation. … It restates for our time the issue between liberty and authority with the power and rigor of reasoning with which John Stuart Mill stated the issue for his own generation in his great essay On Liberty. … It is an arresting call to all well-intentioned planners and socialists, to all those who are sincere democrats and liberals at heart to stop, look and listen.
— Henry Hazlitt, New York Times Book Review

10 February 2009   "Should Free Market Liberals Welcome or Reject the Extended Roaming Report?"

The Roaming Regulation has divided opinion as to whether the regulation is a necessary step to intervene in what some see as an uncompetitive market or whether price regulation is simply wrong either in principle or because it could stifle investment and innovation.

What should free market liberals make of this? Should they support price regulation to stimulate the market or should they see this regulation as interfering in the operation of the market? These are some of the questions addressed by the discussants, Adina Valean MEP, EP rapporteur for the Roaming 2 Report, and Valentin Petkanchin of the Institut Molinari. Under the moderation of Syed Kamall MEP, the participants engaged in a lively and fruitful debate. read more

25 November 2008 - Conference on "Better Regulation"

Launched in 2005, the EU's renewed initiative for Better Regulation focusing on growth and jobs aims at the simplification and improvement of existing and future regulation. After three years, what are its results across business sectors? Is the EU Better Regulations Strategy today contributing to the promotion of innovation and entrepreneurship? How can business actively participate in consultations and contribute its experience and technical expertise to the provision of better legislation?

With such questions in mind, the Ludwig von Mises Institute-Europe (LVMI) had the great pleasure of hosting a conference on "Better Regulation" in Brussels. Participants from the academic, institutional, private and media fields joined in an engaging and profitable day of discussion.

14 October 2008   "The future of tax competition"

The Ludwig von Mises Institute-Europe had the pleasure of organising together with the Taxpayers Association of Europe, the Brussels Network and Alexander Graf Lambsdorff a debate on the current and future state of tax regulation in the European Union.

After an opening speech by Philip Kermode of the DG Taxation and Customs Union, European Commission, Michaël Jager of the Taxpayers Association of Europe and Graham Mather of the European Policy Forum offered different interpretations of the issue, and Rotger Kindermann of the European Journalist Association engaged the public in a debate Which will likely keep Brussels busy for some longer.

In particular, the debate focused on the following:
- How will tax harmonization affect the corporate tax base in Europe?
- Will tax harmonization lead to an increase in tax levels?
- Will tax harmonization avoid distorted levels of competition, or will it erode intra-state competition?
- Is this merely a technical tax issue, or a move towards further EU interference in tax regulation?

Location: European Parliament, Brussels
